Why does this site exist?
It started at a kitchen table in Frisco, with an electric bill that made no sense. A "discount" that only worked at exactly the right usage. Fine print that works because nobody reads it.
We built this site around one rule: show the math. Every ranking checks out on a calculator. Every recommendation tells you first how we're paid. Full story on ourAbout page.

The Storehouse is a food pantry near the kitchen table where this company started. By their own count they serve more than 1,200 families a week. It costs you nothing: providers pay us, and we give the first tenth away.

Why can some Texans choose and others can't?
Texas opened most of its electricity market to competition in 2002. Most, not all. City utilities like Austin Energy and San Antonio's CPS Energy kept their customers. El Paso and the Panhandle run separate grids with one regulated utility each; most co-ops stayed single-provider. Common questions
Why can some Texans choose their electricity provider and others can’t?
Texas opened most of its electricity market to competition in 2002, but cities with their own utility, like Austin (Austin Energy) and San Antonio (CPS Energy), kept a single provider. El Paso and the Panhandle sit on different power grids with one regulated utility. Electric co-ops also usually keep a single provider. Your exact service address and delivery utility determine whether you can choose.
What does "deregulated" actually mean for my bill?
It means two companies play a role: the utility that owns the poles and wires (you can’t choose them), and the provider that sells you the electricity (you can). Providers compete on price, so the same house can pay noticeably different amounts depending on the plan. Comparing is how you find out which side of that difference you’re on.
What if my address doesn’t appear?
Check the spelling, apartment or unit, and ZIP. Co-op or municipal service, new construction, or a different address format can prevent a match. No match does not prove you cannot switch. Your electric utility can confirm your options. CoServ Electric customers cannot switch retail providers.
Is Texas Power Search free? How do you make money?
Free for you, always. If you enroll in a plan through our links, the provider pays us a commission. That’s disclosed before every recommendation, and it never changes our rankings, which are based on what a plan costs at your usage. And 10% of every commission dollar, counted off the top, goes to The Storehouse of Collin County.

Our plan data comes from ComparePower, a Texas electricity marketplace: 636 plans across our supported delivery utility territories, last pulled 2026-09-10. The search checks ComparePower for current plans, after matching your service address. If the lookup fails, we do not show ZIP-based or saved plans. This is partner inventory, not every plan in Texas. Check the official Electricity Facts Label and confirm the latest rate on ComparePower before enrolling.
